5 Tips for a Healthier Smile Between Checkups

Twice-a-year visits catch problems early, but the real work happens at home, brush by brush. Here are five habits our hygienists wish every patient followed.
1. Brush for the full two minutes. Most people stop at 45 seconds. Try an electric brush with a built-in timer, or just play a two-minute song — it makes a bigger difference than switching toothpaste brands.
2. Floss before you brush, not after. Flossing first loosens debris between teeth so your toothpaste's fluoride can actually reach those surfaces. It sounds small, but it noticeably cuts down on cavities between molars.
3. Rinse with water after coffee, wine, or soda. You don't need to brush immediately (acidic drinks can soften enamel briefly), but a quick water rinse limits staining and acid exposure until you can brush later.
4. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months. Frayed bristles clean less effectively and can start to harbor bacteria. Set a recurring reminder on your phone if you tend to forget.
5. Don't skip the tongue. A lot of morning breath and bacteria buildup lives on the tongue, not just the teeth. A few gentle passes with your brush or a tongue scraper goes a long way.
Small habits, repeated daily, do more for your smile than any single dentist visit. If it's been a while since your last cleaning, we'd love to see you — get in touch and we'll find a time that works.
